In our first Further Education community meetup of 2025, we were joined by Nigel Holloway, Head of AI and Digital Innovation, at Coleg Cambria. Nigel discussed Coleg Cambria’s approach to AI – what it has done so far, what it is planning to do moving forward, and the benefits of using an AI Adoption Framework.
Nigel gave a great overview of their work, including the AI and Digital Strategy Group, which meets monthly to discuss everything AI-related happening at the college. He also discussed the staff and learner guidance they have in place, as well as their involvement in Project Icarus, a Welsh Government-funded project that explored a range of AI tools and their outcomes.
He also noted that the college conducted their first internal AI audit, which covered a range of areas to ensure the college was on the right track with its AI initiatives. Another key topic discussed was the tools currently being trialled at the college, including Gemini, Elicit, Brisk AI, and the Adobe suite.
During the Q&A session, discussion continued around tools and in particular, the choice between Gemini, ChatGPT Pro and Claude for colleges. Given the changes to the Gemini offering in December, it seemed that Gemini was slightly ahead as the age restriction is now lower, and therefore available to students under 18 years. Quizizz was also highlighted, as they have expanded their offering recently.

Next month
Join us again on the 18th February 12.30-1.30 for a brilliant session from Kim Blanchard & Patrick Kelly-Goss from Activate Learning.
They will be sharing the innovative ways AI is being utilised at Activate Learning to create engaging and effective learning activities, support students in acting on feedback, and adapt the presentation of information to meet the unique needs of each learner. Discover how AI-generated content, interactive tools, and personalised support strategies are creating dynamic learning environments that enhance student success and empower educators. This session will provide valuable insights and practical examples of AI in action within Activate Learning maintaining a human-centric approach.
