TeacherMatic Assessment Pilot – call for applications

A mature student using a tablet in a busy school cafeteria.

This pilot is part of our wider AI in Assessment Pilot for 2025–26. If you haven’t already, we recommend starting with the AI in Assessment Pilot blog to understand the context of the overarching project.

In this blog, you’ll find out:

  • About TeacherMatic
  • What the pilot will involve
  • What’s expected of pilot participants

About TeacherMatic

TeacherMatic uses generative AI to support educators and leaders in creating a wide range of resources—from lesson plans and project plans to institutional policies and homework tasks.

Jisc previously piloted TeacherMatic in 2023, finding it to be a strong product, which has since seen significant uptake in the sector. Please do read the two reports that came out of this: one for the further education strand, the other for the higher education strand.

For this pilot, we’ll focus on the Feedback Generator, which creates feedback based on the assignment brief, assignment title or marking rubric – as well as your chosen feedback style and grading options. Participants will also have access to the full suite of Generators, including the SPaG Feedback Generator, Rubric Generator, and Quiz Generator.

You can explore TeacherMatic further on their website, and check out their resource hub for tutorials, help articles, and onboarding guides.

Pilot Overview

The pilot will run from September 2025 to August 2026 and will include 8 institutions (colleges or universities).

Each participating institution will receive 50 staff licences to use the platform, which they will retain for the full academic year.

TeacherMatic is a staff-led platform—so students won’t need accounts or licences.

TeacherMatic also functions as a standalone platform. Integrations are not necessary, though optional integrations are available (please see further details below).

Who Will Do What?

Project Leads

Each institution will have at least one Project Lead. The project lead(s) will either act as the organisation’s admin(s), or delegate this role to a named person.

Project Leads/admins will:

  • Set up and manage accounts (admin responsibility)
  • Monitor usage across the institution (admin responsibility)
  • Choose which staff members receive licences
  • Attend a one-hour admin session (for leads across all institutions)
  • Attend a one-hour intro session specific to their institution
  • Join fortnightly vendor-led check-ins (which may be weekly during busier periods, i.e. set up), monthly community sessions, and complete fortnightly progress reports

There can be more than one Project Lead per institution.

Licence Holders (Staff Users)

Up to 49 additional staff members can receive licences. You don’t need to identify all participants now, but please come with a clear idea of where you’d like to use TeacherMatic—subject areas, types of assessment, and student numbers.

Licence holders are invited but not required to attend the vendor-led check-in sessions and monthly community sessions.

They should, however, attend the intro session for their institution and identify which assessments they’ll use the tool for (they’ll be asked to submit this info via a short form).

Project Sponsors

Project Sponsors are there to provide strategic support and make sure the pilot runs smoothly. They’ll help by:

  • Ensuring the Pilot Participation Agreement is signed
  • Ensuring institutional capacity and engagement
  • Supporting the Project Lead
  • Supporting the evaluation activities

Sponsors should attend the intro session for their institution. They are invited but not required to attend the other sessions.

Where TeacherMatic Works Best

TeacherMatic is designed for a wide range of assessment-related tasks, including:

  • Formative assessment
  • Summative feedback and grading support
  • Rubric-based marking and consistency checks

TeacherMatic is particularly effective for supporting teaching and assessment at levels 1 to 5 and is widely used across both further and higher education. The product is constantly developing, and TeacherMatic is becoming increasingly confident in its performance at Level 6, while significant progress is being made in its effectiveness in postgraduate contexts. For those participants who decide to use TeacherMatic for assessments at these higher levels, TeacherMatic would look to further improve the product in this area based on your experiences and feedback.

TeacherMatic is not recommended for highly numerical subjects or practical/performance-based assessments.

As with most AI in assessment tools, it is also not designed to replace the judgement of a teacher. All outputs should be reviewed and, where necessary, adapted by a human before use.

Setting Up

TeacherMatic can be used as a standalone tool or integrated into your systems.

Out-of-the-box integrations include:

  • Google or Microsoft authentication (SSO)

Each organisation will need to provide the name and email of at least one admin to get started. Once set up, the admin will receive resources including a full admin guide. Support is available throughout via the TeacherMatic helpdesk (support@teachermatic.com).

What to Expect During the Pilot

  • Each licence holder will identify the assessments they want to use TeacherMatic for (subject, assessment type, student numbers, and dates) and submit this to Jisc via a dedicated form.
  • Project Leads will monitor usage, attend fortnightly vendor sessions (which may be weekly during busier periods) and monthly community sessions, and complete fortnightly progress reports.

Training & Support

Participants will have access to:

Live Sessions:

  • One-hour intro session for each institution (for all participating staff)
  • One-hour admin session for Project Leads across all institutions

Asynchronous Resources:

  • An online self-paced course
  • A Help Centre with FAQs and searchable guides
  • YouTube walkthroughs

Evaluation: April 2026

All participating institutions will contribute to the pilot evaluation, which includes:

  • Surveys and focus groups with staff and students
  • Input from Project Leads and Sponsors to help coordinate participation

The aims of the evaluation are to:

  • Understand TeacherMatic’s impact on marking and feedback workload
  • Capture different stakeholder views on AI in assessment
  • Assess TeacherMatic’s effectiveness and suitability
  • Help Jisc improve future pilots

Post-Pilot: What Happens Next?

There’s no obligation to subscribe after the pilot, but we know many participants want an idea of costs before committing to a pilot.

TeacherMatic licences cost £30 per user per year for institutions buying more than 50 licences. More details will be shared during the pilot.

A note for existing TeacherMatic users

We recognise that many colleges and universities will already hold TeacherMatic licences for a number of their staff.

If this is the case for your institution, you’re welcome to apply to join the TeacherMatic pilot and use the available licences to extend usage to new members of staff (you’re welcome to select project leads who already have experience of using TeacherMatic).
