How to get the best out of AI isn’t just a technical question, it’s a values-based one. We’ve already seen examples of algorithms that unintentionally reinforce bias, erode trust, or remove human judgement from critical decisions. At the same time, we’ve also seen how AI can open doors to new learning opportunities, reduce teacher workload, and make education more inclusive.

This focused module explores the frameworks and principles supporting ethical AI, and gives participants the space to reflect on how they can use AI responsibly in their contexts.

What you’ll learn

The module is designed to be interactive, with real-world examples, scenarios, and short videos. By working through it, you’ll gain:

  • A clear understanding of what ethical and responsible AI use looks like in practice.
  • Insights into key frameworks, including the EU AI Act, UNESCO’s recommendations, and the UK Government’s White Paper.
  • Space to reflect on the risks and opportunities of generative AI in education.
  • Practical suggestions to think about how these principles apply in your own context.

You’ll be asked to consider realistic scenarios, test your knowledge through quizzes, and join forum discussions with fellow learners.

Who it’s for

The course is open to all staff at Jisc member institutions for free. It will be useful to anyone who wants to understand more about how AI can be used responsibly, and should take around 1 hour to complete.

Next steps

There’s no shortage of hype around AI, but thoughtful, ethical use requires time and reflection. This module is not designed to give you all the answers. That said it will equip you with the right questions—and a framework to think them through.

If you’d like to complete the course, please do go to the booking page to sign up. New places will be made available on the 1st of every month.
