Outcomes from our FE AI Detection Working Group

Earlier this year, in response to member queries about cheaper alternatives to Turnitin, we established a working group to address AI detection issues in further education (FE). The aim of this group was to create guidance and provide recommendations around AI detection for the wider community.

Meetings

Our first meeting focused on AI detection issues in institutions and the related queries around awarding body guidance. The general consensus was that finding a new, cheaper detection tool wasn’t necessary, as awareness of the issues surrounding these tools has increased. You can read our latest guidance in our blog post AI detection latest recommendations for more information.

We therefore shifted our focus to AI misuse prevention. In the following meetings, we discussed JCQ’s guidance on AI use in assessments. SMB College Group used this guidance to create an AI misuse prevention poster, which was shared with the group. Everyone then provided feedback on whether a similar guide would be useful within their institution and, if so, what adaptations would be required.

Current work

We were planning to make a customisable version of the poster available for each institution, but instead felt that the content tied in really well with our FE learner resources work, so we have joined the efforts together.

Within the Jisc AI team, work is currently underway to create the resources, which will be available to colleges shortly.

Next steps

In our last meeting, the issue of consent for using AI tools with learners under 18 emerged as a significant concern, particularly regarding tools like Copilot and ChatGPT. This issue has been frequently flagged by other institutions as well, so the AI team at Jisc released a blog on age restrictions and consent to use generative AI over the summer. We have also recently published this blog on interpreting terms and conditions for safe use which we hope will be useful.

We will be starting new working groups soon and will share information about these as soon as we can. We’d love for you to join us so please do keep an eye on our blog and Jiscmail for updates.
