Learner Resources on Generative AI for Further Education

Version 1.1 – 19 May 2025. First version published 23rd Sept 2024

We are pleased to share a set of resources developed for Further Education (FE) to help build learners’ AI literacy. This has been a collaborative effort from our working group, who helped identify and review the key topics.

What we’ve focused on

The learner resources cover a range of key areas in AI literacy. These include:

  • Getting to know Artificial Intelligence (AI) – Introduces what AI is, with a glossary of key terms, an overview of how AI systems are developed, and a discussion of their benefits and limitations for users.

  • Using AI responsibly – Provides guidance on using AI responsibly, offering practical advice for learners and encouraging consideration of the broader ethical implications of AI.

  • Using AI to support your education – Offers practical examples of how learners can use AI to enhance their studies. Each activity presents a scenario where AI acts as a learning aid not a replacement, and includes suggested tools, prompts, and tips. Institutions can customise the tool selection to reflect their own approved resources.

Throughout the development of these practical examples, we aimed to consider the broader skills learners could develop when using generative AI. The resources also include suggested assessment activities.

How could these resources be used?

These learner resources have been created for FE institutions to use and adapt as needed. You may wish to download and adjust them to suit your institution, for example creating a VLE course focused on AI literacy for learners or incorporating some of the activities into tutorials. The materials are designed to be flexible and adaptable.

To accompany these resources, we have produced Generative AI Literacy for Further Education Learners: Core Level as part of a separate working group focused on defining AI literacy levels for learners. This guide helps learners build a solid foundation in understanding generative AI. Learners can use these resources to gain knowledge about AI and then self-assess against the core level to identify areas for further development in their AI literacy journey.

How to access the resources?

You can now explore and download the full set of resources directly from our Learner Resources on Generative AI for Further Education Padlet. The Padlet is organised into three columns:

  • Columns 1 & 2 feature Word documents introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Using AI Responsibly, each accompanied by a short summary video and transcript.
  • Column 3 offers hands-on prompting activities that learners can follow to apply their understanding.

At the top of each column, you’ll find a ZIP file containing all the resources from that section for quick and easy download.

To download individual items, simply click the three-dot menu (…) on the post and choose ‘Download Attachment’.

The resources are now ready to be shared with learners, and we’re excited to see how they’ll be used so please send us feedback to AI@jisc.ac.uk.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to this working group.
