We’re pleased to announce that AI literacy for teaching and learning curriculum – Module 1 Understanding AI (AI foundations and awareness) launched on 1 April 2026. Module 2 – Applied AI skills (essential AI skills) became available from 1 May 2026, and Module 3 – Ethical and responsible use of AI (critical evaluation and responsible use) from 1 June, as part of a phased rollout. These digital learning modules are available for institutions to purchase and host on their VLE or LMS.
Following the success of the AI literacy for teaching and learning curriculum live webinars, Jisc has developed a series of digital learning modules. These provide a flexible route for institutions to support staff in building AI literacy. These modules are designed for teaching and learning staff in the UK further and higher education sector.
Curriculum overview
Module 1 – Understanding AI (AI foundations and awareness)
Module 1 is designed for staff who want to develop a foundational understanding of AI and its relevance to teaching and learning.
The module takes around one hour to complete and is structured into three key learning sections, providing a clear and accessible introduction to AI concepts and practice.
- Section 1: Understanding AI – introduces core concepts, key terminology and a brief history of AI, with a focus on generative AI and how current tools have developed
- Section 2: AI in teaching and learning – explores how educators and students are using AI, alongside the opportunities and challenges this presents for learning, assessment and student support
- Section 3: Effective prompting – introduces the fundamentals of prompting and how to evaluate AI-generated outputs in an educational context
Module 2 – Applied AI skills (essential AI skills)
Building on this foundation, Module 2 is designed for staff who want to develop practical confidence in using AI for teaching and learning.
The module focuses on how AI can support day-to-day teaching, assessment and academic administration tasks. This includes creating and adapting resources, supporting assessment and feedback, improving accessibility and differentiation, and reducing routine administrative workload.
Content is organised into a series of themed sections, allowing participants to focus on areas most relevant to their role or priorities. Each section includes practical demonstrations, opportunities for reflection and knowledge-check activities, with a short assessment at the end of the module.
Module 3 – Ethical and responsible use of AI (critical evaluation and responsible use)
Module 3 builds on this practical application by supporting staff to develop their understanding of ethical and responsible use of AI in teaching and learning.
The module takes around one hour to complete and is structured into three key learning sections, supporting critical evaluation and responsible decision-making in educational contexts.
Section 1: Critically evaluating AI – explores how AI-generated content can reflect bias and misinformation, how these arise, and how to approach outputs with critical judgement in teaching and learning contexts
Section 2: Responsible and ethical use of AI – explores how to use AI in ways that protect data, maintain trust, and align with institutional guidance, including considerations around privacy, security and intellectual property
Section 3: AI, assessment and academic integrity – explores how AI is shaping assessment in tertiary education, including the limitations of AI detection and student perspectives
Designed to support flexible staff development
Each module is designed to fit around existing workloads, with no requirement to complete them in one sitting. Content can be explored at an individual’s pace, with opportunities to revisit sections to support reflection on teaching and learning practice.
Each learning section includes demonstrations and knowledge-check activities. Modules conclude with a short assessment, and successful completion is determined by achieving the required passing score.
Who the modules are for?
The digital learning modules form an AI literacy for teaching and learning curriculum designed to support staff development across further and higher education.
Module 1 supports staff to build a foundational understanding of AI and develop awareness of its role in teaching and learning. Module 2 focuses on how AI can support day-to-day teaching, assessment and academic administration tasks. Module 3 explores the ethical and responsible use of AI, including critical evaluation, academic integrity and data considerations.
Together, the modules provide a structured approach to developing understanding, applying AI in practice, and considering its use in educational contexts.
Benefits
By completing the curriculum, participants will be able to:
- Develop a clear understanding of AI’s key principles, terminology and relevance in education
- Make informed decisions about AI adoption by recognising its opportunities and challenges
- Apply AI to support teaching, assessment and day-to-day academic and administrative tasks
- Recognise where AI can improve productivity and support teaching and learning practice
- Critically evaluate AI outputs, including identifying bias and misinformation
- Understand responsible and ethical use of AI, including considerations around academic integrity, data privacy and security
For institutions, the three digital learning modules provide a consistent and scalable way to build baseline AI literacy across teaching and learning teams.
Available formats
All digital learning modules are available in standard formats, allowing institutions to install and host them on their VLE or LMS in the following available formats:
- SCORM 1.2
- SCORM 2004
- cmi5
- xAPI
