Jisc’s AI Literacy Curriculum for teaching and learning staff supports staff in building confidence, capability and critical AI literacy in the use of AI.
Designed for further and higher education contexts, the curriculum provides structured support to help staff develop the knowledge, practical skills and critical awareness needed to use AI effectively, responsibly and with confidence in teaching and learning practice.
Starting with foundational understanding, the curriculum moves into practical skills and develops the critical awareness needed for responsible and informed use.
Whether you’re new to AI or already experimenting with it, the curriculum provides structure and support to help you use AI more effectively, save time, and make informed decisions about when and how to apply it in practice.
Why this matters for teaching and learning staff
AI is influencing how we design learning, create resources, provide feedback, and support students. But alongside the benefits, it raises new challenges, from academic integrity to data privacy and bias.
Becoming AI literate means understanding how AI works, where it can help, and how to use it responsibly in a teaching context. It helps you make informed decisions, adapt with confidence, and ensure your practice remains inclusive, ethical and effective.
This curriculum gives you the knowledge and skills to use AI confidently and responsibly in your day-to-day work, whether that’s planning lessons, designing assessments, or supporting student learning.
Curriculum overview
The teaching and learning curriculum is organised into three modules, each made up of focused sessions that can be completed individually or followed as a complete learning pathway.
We recommend engaging with all parts of a module to get the most benefit, as each element builds on the last to provide a well-rounded learning experience.

I am visiting professor at the University and plan to do a body of research housed in the departments of Law and of Social Sciences.
Because of my different background, I am clueless how to access AI for the references I need to do my work. I would appreciate a short course for beginners if such a thing exists at University level. Perhaps we should know that before we even get invited !
Thank you for your comment about a short course. Our AI Literacy for Teaching and Learning Staff curriculum is designed with a broad focus. The best place to start would be to contact the subject librarians at your institution who are aligned with your field of research, as they should be able to offer guidance tailored to the tools available to you, and there’s quite a wide range.
