Kicking off our HE TeacherMatic Pilot

Jisc’s National Centre for AI in Tertiary Education (NCAITE) has again teamed up with TeacherMatic. This time we want to investigate how the generative AI tool TeacherMatic works with our Higher Education members. The aim is to evaluate how the use of the generative AI tool can be used to create teaching and learning content and reduce workload.

At the start of November, we put the call out for Higher Education institutions to take part and again received a high number of applications. We can now confirm that University College Birmingham, Stranmillis University College, University of Chester, University of East Anglia, University of Strathclyde, University of Sunderland and the University of Westminster have all been chosen to take part in the pilot.

TeacherMatic is an AI platform designed to utilise generative AI to help educational staff by generating content. TeacherMatic aims to reduce workload and save time by creating resources such as assessment rubrics, discussion topics, and generating ideas for laboratory sessions.

TeacherMatic has developed since our initial testing. Now, there are over 40 generators available. These include PowerPoints, social media posts, worksheet activities, and coaching prompts, which are based on the GROW model. The layout has also changed, and generators are now categorised into sectors. Some are considered top generators and users can also bookmark the ones they most frequently use. Along with this, functionality has improved and it now includes a function to save past generations, which organises them in a file structure.’

The pilot stages will run from January 2024 and will be reviewed in June 2024 in two phases. Phase one, the shorter phase, will run from January until February. We will then gather initial feedback from the pilot participants. Phase two is longer and is designed to enable users to fully utilise and evaluate the level, resource quality, and generated content. Each pilot institution will receive 50 licences for 12 months. They will also receive training from NCAITE and TeacherMatic.

We are looking forward to reviewing how well this generative AI tool works for our Higher Education members.
